Al Wali is a small Lebanese restaurant in an indoor shopping
center in the Diamond District of Antwerp, close to the beautiful Central
Station. It caters primarily to Jewish and Israeli traders. While it was the
original one in that shopping center, it is now surrounded by newer and fancier
shawarma places. They have all the classics: shawarma, kofte, felafel (all as
sandwiches and plates) as well as salads (e.g. tabbouleh) and even some
specialties (e.g. fish and snails).
I am getting my usual, a Shawarma (Shoarma) sandwich (€5). As I wait
for it, I am munching from the little bowl with delicious olives and peppers,
which you get for free on the side. The shawarma is made with chicken meat,
which comes fresh from a skewer, and is wrapped into Lebanese pita with
lettuce, onion, tomato and some red beats. They finish it with some tahini and then
wrap it and press it in a panini press. The taste is very special and very
different from the regular (Egyptian) shawarma in Belgium or the Netherlands or
the Turkish Döner Kebab so popular in Germany. It has much more flavor,
although this time the meat was a bit too dry.
VERDICT:
91/100
Al Wali is the perfect place for an affordable and very
tasty Lebanese shawarma experience in Antwerp.
