Al Teatro is a local ice cream chain in Berlin, which is mostly situated in big malls and tram and metro stations. It serves some twenty different flavors as well as coffee and cakes. Most of the flavors are the usual suspects, including fruity sorbets.

 

I get a cone with two scoops (€3). The Tropical Fruit tastes a bit bland and artificial. The Hazelnut is ok, but too creamy and sweet.

VERDICT: 72/100

OK, but you can do much better in Berlin.

EssBahn (Berlin, Germany)

EssBahn is an Imbiss in two big old train wagons just outside of the Berlin Tegel Airport terminal. It is always quite busy and serves mainly Currywurst and fries. Interestingly, it has various options of Currywurst sauce with increasing levels of spiciness.

 

I get a Currywurst with Chili (3.50), which is a bit more spicy. It is actually much better than I had expected and has a nice kick to it.

VERDICT: 83/100

Remarkably good Currywurst, given the touristic location, but very pricey.

Imbiss Meinecke 27 (Berlin, Germany)

Imbiss Meinecke27 is a beautiful old Imbiss just off the extremely expensive Kurfurstersamm. It looks almost exactly like a Belgian frituur inside. I assume it was built in the 1950s and has hardly been change since. It has the staples of a Berlin imbiss: bockwurst, Currywurst, fries, burgers, etc.

 

I get a Currywurst mit Pommess (€5). I get extra mayo (+€0.30) as they are quite skimpy on it. The fries are classic German, deepf ried at too low heat and therefore a bit saggie. The Currywurst is the best I have had so far in Berlin: snappy with a not overpowering sauce that has a slight kick. Excellent!

VERDICT: 89/100

Bit pricey but the place to go for Currywurst (just don’t take the fries).

Curry Wolf (Berlin, Germany)

Curry Wolf is a small Imbiss that serves mainly Currywurst and fries but does offer it’s own spicy sauce. It has two locations in Berlin and I visited the one just off the Kudamm.

I get a Meal with Currywurst, Fries and a Drink (€6.70). The Currywurst is the usual soft kind, but the sauce is special. It has some onions in it and has a little kick. The fries are very thin and decent.

VERDIXT: 84/100

Among the best Currywurst I have had in Berlin.

DDR Softies (Berlin, Germany)

DDR Softeis is a small food cart that plays on Ostalgie (nostalgia for the East). It is normally located close to some of the remains of the Berlin Wall, one of the top touristic spots in Berlin. This day it is part of some kind of festival at the also highly touristic Alexanderplatz. The serve just one thing: ‘soft ice’ based on recipe of the former GDR. I get a normal, which is a swirl of vanilla and chocolate (€2). It is virtually tasteless. Just cold.

VERDICT: 80/100

Perhaps fun for the experience but not for the taste (because it doesn’t have any).

Snack Express (Berlin, Germany)

Small Imbiss on outside of the Gallerie Kaufhof, a huge department store, at the busy and touristic Alexanderplatz. It carries the usual: various sausages with bread or fries. I get the Currywurst with Fries (€4). The sausage is not the usual, a bit hardy and snappier than usual. The sauce is watery. The fries are undercooked.

VERDICT: 67/100

To be avoided.

PommStore (Berlin, Germany)

PommStore is a German chain that serves Belgian fries as well as potato wedges together with traditional German meats, notably Currywurst and Boulettes. It started in 2009 in Bremen and currently has almost ten locations throughout Germany. I visit the one in the food court of the Mall of Berlin.

I get Menu 2 (€6.95): Currywurst, fries, drink. The sausage is big but a bit bland, the sauce is just curry ketchup. The only nice thing is that you can add spices yourself. The fries are thick and very crispy (couple of times refried?). They look Belgian, but don't taste like it. Still quite decent.

VERDICT: 83/100

If you go, go for the fries, not the meat.
